Chester Nomads are saddened to learn of the passing of Reg Read, a long standing and stalwart member of the club.
Reg joined the club on assuming his role as a teacher at Kings School and represented the club for many years from the 60s to the 90s. He played predominantly as full back and was part of a fantastic team captained by Jerry Ireland for many years. As a player he was hard, but fair – just as he was in all aspects of his life. He actively participated in the running of the club, both as team Captain and Manager and latterly for many years as Treasurer, and was instrumental in the club’s purchase of the Garrison Ground which we benefit from to this day.
An all round sportsman he was also a talented cricketer, representing Boughton Hall as a wicket keeper batsman as well as Barrow CC in later years. For many years Reg enjoyed playing golf at Vicars Cross and then Eaton before retiring aged 70.
Reg continued to support the club as a Vice President until his passing. He leaves behind his wife Margaret and daughter Katy and son Phillip.
Reg’s funeral will take place on Sept 8th at midday at St Werburghs Church with refreshment at the club after. All who knew Reg are very welcome to attend.
Rest in Peace Reg from all at Chester Nomads
